Lack of wind, vehicular emission leading to rise in pollution in Delhi NCR region: Scientist

New Delhi, February 18: In a recent study shows, the air quality index (AQI) in parts of Delhi has trickle down to the category of very poor this Friday. It has been recorded that west Delhi's Shadipur regions AQI level was 451.

Recently, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted on Thursday and celebrated good air quality and congratulating the residents, but just after 24 hours the air quality dipped to severely in Delhi.

At the onset of spring season the temperature are rising, and the pollution level is at its peak. There is a sudden spike in the pollutants in the air has been recorded.

"Usually the pollution gets blown away by the wind as the winters say goodbye to Delhi and north India. But a sudden change in weather has halted the pollutants again. Celebrating weather phenomena as achievements is not what's required to tackle pollution, the Delhi government must understand this," said Prof Dr Ravi Kant Pathak, ace air pollution scientist and professor at Gothenburg University, Sweden.

"The primary source of Delhi's air pollution is secondary pollution. That is, what comes out of vehicles is not immediately visible as pollution, but as the weather changes, secondary pollution rises and accumulates after two hours, four hours, six hours, one day, and two days. While a little weather change makes us happy, we must take secondary pollution generation processes in the atmosphere seriously and prepare for them," he added.

The AQI  level in adjoining Noida and Ghaziabad's air quality also hovered between the ‘poor’ to ‘very poor’ categories.
