PTC News Desk: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday slammed the BJP's 12-hour 'Bengal Bandh' as an attempt to "defame" Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee's stinging criticism of the BJP came after the latter staged a 12-hour 'Bengal Bandh' protest following the 'Nabanna Abhijan' violence. Mamata Banerjee stated that the TMC government wants justice for the victims of the R G Kar Hospital and College tragedy.

"We've dedicated this day to the RG Kar doctor. We want justice, yet today the BJP called for a bandh. They do not want justice; they are just trying to defame Bengal," Mamata Banerjee stated.

She also denounced the 'Bandh' and supported police actions against protestors at the Nabanna Abhijan rally.

"We do not support the bandh. The BJP never demanded the resignation of the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, or even Manipur. We saw pictures from yesterday's (Nabanna Abhiyan protest), and I applaud the police for handling the situation appropriately," she remarked.

She further stated that the r@pist would be harshly punished.

"For this, there is only one punishment- to hang till death," she said.

She went on to say that the West Bengal government will pass a bill in the next ten days to ensure r@pists are punished.

"Next week, we will convene an Assembly session and enact a Bill ensuring death punishment for r@pists within 10 days. We'll send this bill to the Governor. If he does not pass the bill, we will sit outside the Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be passed, and he cannot avoid accountability this time," she stated.
