Manipur horror: Police identify 14 more suspects in viral video of women stripped and paraded

Imphal, July 24:  The Manipur Police have identified 14 more persons from a video capturing the disturbing incident of two women being stripped and paraded. Six persons have already been arrested in connection with the viral video, which recorded the May 4 occurrence in Kangpokpi district.

According to information, the two women were subjected to sexual assault before being released by a mob. The distressing 26-second video of the incident emerged on July 19. One of the women featured in the footage is the wife of a retired Army Subedar who had served in the Assam Regiment and fought in the Kargil War.

The incident came to light around a month ago, as a complaint was lodged on June 21 at the Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district.

Manipur has been facing ethnic violence since May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was held in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. As a result of this ongoing turmoil, over 160 persons have lost their lives, and many others have sustained injuries. The Meiteis comprise around 53 per cent of Manipur's population and predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley, while the tribals, including Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and primarily inhabit the hill districts.
