Manipur: Mob surrounds police station near CM's office; shots fired in air to disperse crowd
PTC News Desk: A mob surrounded a police station near the Chief Minister's office in Manipur's Imphal on Wednesday, following which the police had to open fire several rounds in the air to disperse the crowd.
The city's curfew has been reinstated.
According to a report by NDTV, residents heard constant gunfire coming from the direction of the 1st Manipur Rifles complex.
The mob which was allegedly led by the local youth group Arambai Tenggol demanded weapons from the police station in protest of the state government's inaction following the death of a senior police officer by an insurgent sniper in the border town of Moreh yesterday.
The mob clashed with security forces and allegedly attempted to surround the 1st Manipur Rifles complex in Imphal West district, close to the Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister N Biren Singh's office, demanding arms and ammunition, according to police sources.
The security forces baton-charged the mob at first but had to fire in the air as the crowds continued to push in. According to police sources, some people were injured during the clash.
