Nitin Gadkari: Toll booths to end in one year, nationwide electronic toll system coming soon

PTC Web Desk: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday that the traditional toll collection system on highways will be completely replaced within a year. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during Question Hour, he said a new electronic toll system has already been launched at 10 locations and will be expanded across India soon.

Nitin Gadkari assured that once the new system is in place, vehicles will no longer have to stop at toll plazas. “This toll system will end. There will be no one to stop you for toll collection. Within a year, an electronic toll collection system will be implemented nationwide,” he said.

He also informed Parliament that around 4,500 highway projects worth Rs 10 lakh crore are currently under construction across the country.

According to an official statement, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme to make toll payments quicker and more efficient. The system uses FASTag, an RFID-based sticker placed on a vehicle’s windscreen, which allows automatic toll deduction from the user’s linked bank account without stopping at toll booths.

With this advancement, the government aims to reduce congestion, save travel time and create a smoother experience for highway commuters.
