One year to RG Kar case: Police resort to lathicharge as protestors march towards Bengal secretariat demanding justice
PTC News Desk: Police on Saturday clashed with demonstrators as the parents of the young RG Kar doctor, who was raped and murdered last year, led a march to the West Bengal secretariat (Nabanna) on Saturday.
Tensions escalated when protesters tried to breach barricades to reach Nabanna, with the victim’s mother accusing police of assaulting her and breaking her bangles. Officers used lathi charges to disperse the crowd, which included several BJP leaders, among them Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari.
Adhikari alleged that BJP MLAs were baton-charged and that the victim’s parents were injured during the police action.
During the protest, the victim’s mother said, “Mamata Banerjee's police roughed me up without provocation, broke my bangles. Why are they stopping us? All we want is to reach secretariat, ask for justice for my daughter.” Visuals also showed the victim's parents requesting permission from the police to march towards the West Bengal secretariat, Nabanna, while standing behind the barricades.
In January, a CBI court found Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, guilty of raping and murdering a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The crime took place in August 2024, when the doctor’s body was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall. A postmortem revealed she had been throttled and smothered. Amid widespread protests, the Calcutta High Court handed the case over to the CBI.
The incident also prompted the resignation of the college principal and sparked criticism of the state government.
