PM Modi advocates for peace in Poland speech ahead of Ukraine visit
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a powerful address to the Indian community in Poland, reiterated his stance that 'this is not an era of war.' His message, delivered just two days before his historic visit to Ukraine, emphasised India's commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution to Russia's ongoing invasion.
"India is a staunch advocate for lasting peace in this region," PM Modi stated. "Our position is unequivocal—this isn't a time for war. It's a time for unity against the challenges that threaten humanity. Therefore, India firmly believes in the power of diplomacy and dialogue."
At 73, PM Modi is set to become the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine, marking a significant moment in India's foreign policy. This trip also makes him the first Indian leader in 45 years to visit Poland, a close ally of Kyiv and a crucial transit point for international leaders heading to Ukraine.
PM Modi's upcoming visit to Ukraine on August 23 is at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky. During his visit, the Prime Minister has committed to sharing India’s perspective on achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict, underscoring the importance of dialogue in resolving such disputes.
This visit follows closely on the heels of his high-profile trip to Moscow nearly six weeks ago, a visit that drew criticism from the United States and several Western allies due to the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
PM Modi's "not an era of war" remark originally gained international attention in September 2022, when he conveyed this sentiment to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. During the summit in Samarkand on September 16, he highlighted the urgent need to address global challenges such as food security, fuel availability, and fertiliser supplies, reinforcing his message that the current era should focus on peace rather than conflict.
Before departing for Poland, the Prime Minister expressed his hopes for the region's future: "As a friend and partner, we earnestly wish for the swift return of peace and stability." Upon his arrival in Poland for a two-day visit, PM Modi paid tribute to the shared history between India and Poland by laying wreaths at the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar Memorial and the Kolhapur Memorial in Warsaw. These sites stand as poignant reminders of the strong ties between the two nations, particularly during times of hardship.
