Rain, thunderstorm lash several parts of north India; waterlogging leads to traffic chaos

Today Weather Update: North Indians woke up to pleasant weather, heavy rainfall and thunderstorm on Saturday morning, offering respite from the sweltering heat. 

Monsoon knocks the door of North India as heavy rainfall in several parts , including Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana and Delhi-NCR brought respite from the searing heatwave in the region and the temperature has also dropped by a few notches.


IMD issues alert for rainfall 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy rainfall is likely to occur over North India in the next four to five days. 

"Heavy rains in North India for the next four to five days. The effect of active monsoon will be seen in other states," the IMD said in a statement.


The agency urged people up north to take necessary precautions against heavy rainfall.

"Weather Warning for Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh are under a heavy rainfall alert from July 8 to 9.

Be prepared for intense rain and take necessary precautions," the IMD stated.

According to Meteorological Department of Chandigarh, 34.5.0 mm of rain was recorded in Ropar, 68.0 mm in Fatehgarh Sahib  and 23.3 mm  rainfall recorded in Chandigarh.

 

Waterlogging leads to traffic chaos

Meanwhile, overnight rainfall in several places in North India left various residential areas of the city waterlogged.

Several cities experienced severe congestion due to water accumulation, resulting in a traffic jam extending up to several kilometers. 

Commuters may face substantial delays, and public transportation services can also hinder.
