Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty elected first woman president of Press Club of India
PTC News Desk: Senior journalist Sangeeta Barooah has been elected president of Press Club of India, making her first woman to hold the post.
Counting of votes was completed on Sunday, and the results were announced in the evening by Chief Election Commissioner MMC Sharma and his team at the PCI lawns, in the presence of a packed gathering of journalists.
Pisharoty won the presidential election with 1,019 votes, while her rivals Atul Mishra and Arun Sharma secured 129 and 89 votes respectively. Afzal Imam was elected Secretary General with 948 votes, defeating Gyan Prakash, who received 290 votes. Jatin Gandhi won the vice-president’s post with 1,029 votes, beating Prahlad Singh Rajput by a margin of more than 900 votes.
Aditi Rajput was elected Treasurer and PR Sunil Joint Secretary unopposed. In the elections to the 16-member managing committee, Niraj Kumar topped the list with 932 votes, followed by Abhishek Kumar Singh (911), Jahanvi Sen (903), Ashok Kaushik (892), Kallol Bhattacharjee (882), Praveen Jain (878), Agraj Pratap Singh (865), Manoj Sharma (861), Nyanima Basu (851), PB Suresh (838), VP Pandey (833), Prem Bahukhandi (831), Sneha Bhura (829), Javed Akhtar (823), Rezaul Hasan Laskar (781) and Sunil Kumar (780).
After the announcement, Pisharoty said the results reflected the members’ confidence in her panel’s vision and commitment to free, fair and responsible journalism. Outgoing President Gautam Lahiri thanked the members for their support and said the new leadership would work to make the club more inclusive, responsive and relevant to the changing challenges faced by journalists.
