Sikkim flash floods: Rescue operations continue to locate 14 missing soldiers

Sikkim flash floods: The Indian Army stated on Saturday that operations are underway to locate and rescue the remaining 14 missing soldiers and civilians from the recent Sikkim flash floods.

The Indian Army also expressed its condolences for the loss of eight jawans in recent flash floods in Sikkim caused by a cloudburst.


According to the Army, Army Chief General Manoj Pande and all ranks of the Indian Army express sincere condolences on the tragic death of eight Indian Army soldiers in flash floods caused by a glacial lake burst in Sikkim.

"We stand firm with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. COAS and all ranks Indian Army also expressed grief at the loss of civilian lives in this tragic incident,' it stated. "Concerted search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining 14 missing soldiers and other civilians."

It stated that the Indian Army's efforts to provide safety, support, and assistance to the people who were affected by the floods will continue. "Despite the irreparable loss of lives & material, the Indian Army remains committed and prepared for all the contingencies".

According to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), the death toll was at 26, with 142 people still missing. 2.413 people have been rescued, and 1,203 houses have been damaged in the flash flood, it stated.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang stated on Saturday that the majority of the damage in the Teesta River flash floods occurred when the 1200 MW dam in Chungthang in the State's Mangan district broke due to inferior building work by the previous government in the State.

This morning, the CM visited flood-affected areas and relief camps in Naga Village, Mangan, to examine the situation and talked with residents.

On October 3, the Lhonak glacier in the Sikkim Himalayas burst, breaching one side of the lake and raising water levels in Teesta, inundating numerous districts of the state.
