The bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta has directed the probe agency to complete its investigation within a month and arrest the accused officials.

Supreme Court orders CBI probe into custodial torture of J&K constable in Kupwara

PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into alleged custodial torture of a Jammu and Kashmir police constable at the Joint Interrogation Centre in Kupwara. The top court also directed the J&K administration to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the constable.


The court has also sought a status report of the investigation by September.

The bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta has directed the probe agency to complete its investigation within a month and arrest the accused officials. 

The court has asked the CBI to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the custodial violence allegedly occurred at the Kupwara JIC during February 23-26, 2023.

The petitioner has alleged that the constable was brutally tortured and mutilated in the custodyat the Kupwara interrogation facility, seeking registration of FIR against those responsible. The plea had also sought constitution of Special Investigation Team (SIT) or the CBI.

The petitioner also demanded the quashing of an FIR lodged at Kupwara police station under Section 309 of the IPC.
