'Two years, Rs 4 crore medical bill': Mumbai man in vegetative state, family refuses to let son go amid euthanasia ruling

PTC News Desk: The case of Harish Rana has shifted focus on other patients who are battling between life and death or experiencing a 'living death' more precisely. A similar case like that of Harish Rana has come to the fore where Anand Dixit, 35, has been in a vegetative state for over two years following a devastating accident.

Dixit's life changed completely after he met with a major road accident in December 2023 in Gorakhpur. His joy of getting new scooter swiftly turned into a tragedy as the the accident left him with life-threatening injuries pushing him into a permanent vegetative state.

Ever since, he relies on medical support for the survival.  Despite continuous care and treatment, there has been no sign of recovery. His condition reflects what doctors describe as a state where the body remains alive, but there is no conscious response.

His 24-hour caretaker, Arjun Prajapati, has spent 18 months waiting for a blink, a squeeze of a hand, or a single word, but the silence remains absolute.

However, unlike Harish Rana's parents, Anand Dixit's family is not ready to let him go and chosen to continue with the treatment and awaiting a miracle.

Hoping a signal of movement, his parents are emotionally clinging on to the memories of their son in a hope that one day he will regain consciousness.

The prolonged medical care has plunged the family into extreme financial distress with the medical bills crossing Rs 4 crore, forcing them to sell land and use up their savings.

Adding financial burden, the family has claimed that that their health insurance provider rejected claims related to his burden.

Adding to woes, their Mumbai residence was demolished due to the ongoing civic dispute and the family had to shift into a rented apartment while continuing Anand'a treatment.

Anand's mother says she keeps his watch and phone ready every day, waiting "for a miracle."

"I am just waiting for his miracle. The silence in this room is heavy, but a mother's hope is heavier. They took our house and his health, but they cannot take my belief that he will wake up," said Dixit's mother.
