Uttarakhand: Five dead, over 20 hurt after pilgrims’ bus falls into gorge near Kunjapuri in Tehri district
PTC Web Desk: A tragic accident occurred in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district on Monday when a bus carrying pilgrims skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge near Kunjapuri. According to officials, the vehicle was travelling from Rishikesh towards Kunjapuri when the accident took place.
Initial reports confirm that five passengers have died, while 23 others sustained serious injuries. All injured individuals have been shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Rescue operations are continuing at the site.
The bus, bearing registration number UK07PA 1769, reportedly fell nearly 70 metre into the gorge near Hindolakhal. A total of 28 passengers were onboard at the time of the accident. Authorities stated that the victims include pilgrims from Gujarat and Delhi, who were travelling to Kunjapuri Temple.
Upon receiving information, police, district administration and SDRF teams rushed to the location.
Confirming the casualties, ASP Tehri Garhwal JR Joshi stated that rescue and search efforts are still underway as some passengers were scattered around the hillside following the fall.
“As of now, five deaths have been confirmed. Rescue teams are still searching the area as some passengers slipped further down the slope,” ASP Joshi said, adding that the death toll could rise.
Further investigation is currently in progress to determine the cause of the accident.
