PTC Web Desk:  The office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, has stated that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued necessary directions to facilitate postal voting for Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is also a member of the Electoral College, for the vice-presidential election 2025.

Currently, Amritpal Singh is detained under the National Security Act, 1980, at the Central Jail in Dibrugarh, Assam. In accordance with Rule 26 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, the Election Commission has directed that a postal ballot paper be issued to enable him to cast his vote.

As per the prescribed procedure, postal ballot papers for voters under preventive detention are issued only on the day of voting, and the sealed, marked postal ballot envelope must reach the Returning Officer before the commencement of counting.

The Election Commission has further directed the Union Home Ministry and the Assam Government’s Chief Secretary to ensure that the sealed postal ballot envelope is transported via a special courier by air from Dibrugarh and delivered to the Returning Officer before 6 pm on September 9, the scheduled date for counting.

Officials concerned have been instructed to make immediate arrangements and report compliance to the commission.
