Jyotiraditya Scindia: Gearing up for Guna's Lok Sabha battle

PTC News Desk: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia is all set to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024 from the Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh. Scindia is the Union Minister of Civil Aviation in Narendra Modi's NDA government and was appointed to the cabinet in 2021. 

Scindia was a long-time Congressman who was considered a close associate of Rahul Gandhi. He left the party and joined the BJP in 2020 after disagreements with its leadership, particularly in his home state of Madhya Pradesh, which led to the demise of the Kamal Nath-led government.

Born on January 1, 1971, in Gwalior, Scindia is the son of the late Indian politician Madhavrao Scindia, and a grandson of Jivajirao Scindia, the last ruler of the princely state of Gwalior during the British Raj in India.

Scindia has done his schooling at the Doon School in Dehradun. He has a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Harvard University and an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

Jyotiraditya Scindia made his political debut after Madhavrao Scindia, who represented Guna, passed away in September 2001. In 2002, he ran for a byelection in his father's constituency and won.

Political Career

Scindia was re-elected to the Guna Lok Sabha seat in the 2004 general election. He became the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology in 2007. He was elected to a third Lok Sabha term in 2009 and was appointed Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.

He was appointed Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Corporate during the second term of the Manmohan Singh government in 2012. He held the position until 2014.

From Congress to BJP

Scindia made a significant political move in 2019, after nearly two decades of affiliation in the Congress party. He joined the BJP, causing shockwaves across Madhya Pradesh's political landscape. Scindia's decision to join the BJP reflected his disillusionment with the Congress party's internal dynamics.

He played an important role in establishing a BJP government in Madhya Pradesh and was duly rewarded for his efforts.

Scindia has served on several parliamentary committees, including Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, Defence, Finance, and Home and External Affairs. 

Lesser-known facts about Jyotiraditya Scindia 

Scindia lost the Guna seat to the BJP in the 2019 general election. Scindia received 4,86,105 votes, but lost to Saffron Party candidate KP Yadav by 1.25 lakh votes.

The UN reportedly relaxed one of its eligibility criteria to hire Scindia for an internship programme.

Before entering politics, he was an investment banker and worked for Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch 

He is an avid sports fan and enjoys cricket, golf, and swimming.
