Kangana Ranaut hits back at Akali Leader: 'Sexual assault used as mockery undermines women’s suffering'
PTC News Desk: Actor and politician Kangana Ranaut has sharply criticised former Punjab MP Simranjit Singh Mann for his offensive comments about rape. Ranaut took to social media to condemn Mann’s remarks, stating, “It appears this country will never stop trivializing rape. Today, a senior politician compared rape to riding a bicycle. This casual mockery of a serious crime reflects how deeply entrenched rape and violence against women are in our patriarchal society, where even high-profile figures are not spared from such degrading comments.”
Ranaut's response came after Mann, the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), made a controversial statement suggesting that Ranaut could explain how rape happens due to her supposed experience. Mann's comment was in reaction to Ranaut’s earlier allegations that 'rapes' occurred during the farmers' protests, which she claimed were exploited to mock and demean women.
It seems this country will never stop trivialising rape, today this senior politician compared getting raped to riding a bicycle no wonder rapes and violence against women for fun, is so deep rooted in the psyche of this patriarchal nation that it is casually used to tease or… pic.twitter.com/ZHHWPEXawq — Kangana Ranaut (@KanganaTeam) August 29, 2024
Mann’s remarks have faced widespread backlash, with the Punjab Women’s Commission taking note of the insensitivity displayed. The MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi had previously suggested in an interview that the farmers' protests could have escalated into a crisis similar to the one in Bangladesh if not for strong leadership.
Ranaut had alleged that during the nearly year-long farmers' protests in 2019-2020, there were instances of “bodies hanging” and “rapes,” and she even claimed that there was foreign involvement in the so-called “conspiracy.” Her accusations have sparked significant controversy and criticism.
