Rahul Gandhi changes Twitter bio to ‘Dis’Qualified MP’ after Parliament disqualification

New Delhi, March 26: After being disqualified as a Member of Parliament following a Surat court judgement convicting him in a criminal defamation case for his 'Modi surname' remark, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi updated his Twitter account bio to 'Dis'Qualified MP' on Sunday.

Meanwhile, sources said that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi would stage a day-long 'Sankalp Padyatra' at Raj Ghat on Sunday to protest Rahul Gandhi's disqualification as a Lok Sabha MP. Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member on Friday, a day after a Surat court sentenced him to two years in prison in a defamation case filed against him over his statement about the "Modi surname."

The decision was made in response to his April 2019 comment at a Lok Sabha election rally in Kolar, Karnataka, in which he said, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Gandhi's bail was accepted on a surety basis, and the sentence was stayed for 30 days to allow him to appeal to higher courts.

Gandhi slammed the BJP after being convicted in the defamation case and disqualified from the Lok Sabha. During a news conference, Gandhi stated that he is not afraid of going to prison and that his removal from Parliament was intended to divert attention away from the Adani issue.

"Moot question remains who invested Rs 20,000 crore in Adani shell firms? I will keep asking the question," Rahul Gandhi said.

The former MP claimed that the BJP-led government is shielding industrialist Gautam Adani, who is suspected of stock manipulation.

"Why is the BJP-led government allegedly shielding businessman Gautam Adani? Kyuki aap hi Adani ho," he said.

Attacking Prime Minister Modi, he said, "Prime Minister was scared of the next speech that was going to come on Adani. I have seen it in his eyes. That is why, first the distraction and then the disqualification".
