Protein consumption from multiple sources may lower risk of High BP
Beijing (China), March 13: A new study suggests that if one consumes proteins from multiple sources, then there is a lower risk of developing high blood pressure.
The research which was conducted on nearly 12,200 adults in China has been published in the journal, 'American Heart Association'.
The recent study suggests that consuming a balanced diet with a moderate amount of protein from diverse food sources might help prevent new-onset hypertension.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects about half of the population in the United States and is one of the primary causes of cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure affects the circulatory system if it is not addressed, and it is a major contributor to heart attacks, strokes, and other health problems.

Study author Xianhui Qin, M.D., of the National Clinical Research Centre for Kidney Disease at Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China says "Nutrition may be an easily accessible and effective measure to fight against hypertension. Along with fat and carbohydrates, protein is one of the three basic macronutrients."
Poor diet quality has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association, in its 2021 dietary guidance to promote cardiovascular health, recommends eating healthy sources of protein, largely from plants, such as seafood and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, as well as lean cuts and unprocessed forms of meat or poultry.
The American Heart Association also suggests consuming one to two servings, or 5.5 ounces, of protein daily.
"The heart health message is that eating a well-balanced diet that includes proteins from a variety of sources rather than relying on a particular source of dietary protein may assist to prevent the development of high blood pressure," Qin added.
