PTC News Desk: An eight-year-old girl from Punjab's Bathinda district has scripted history after after securing an international chess rating.
Tanishka achieved this milestone while competing in the National Chess Tournament (Under-9 category) held in Gurugram last month. The ratings were officially released after FIDE’s standard calculation procedure.
The International Chess Federation — FIDE (French: Fédération Internationale des Échecs) —publishes new and updated ratings globally during the first week of each month.
To obtain an initial FIDE rating, a player must play at least five games against already-rated opponents and earn a minimum of one point—either through a win or two draws. Additionally, their performance must meet or exceed the rating threshold of 1,400, in line with updated FIDE regulations.
At just six years old, Tanishka secured second place in the Punjab State Chess Championship in the Under-9 category. She later competed in the Senior Women’s Championship in Bathinda, where she scored 2 out of 5 points—a performance that showcased her potential and led her family to pursue her chess training more seriously.
