AAP MPs defection: AAP summons Punjab MLAs for meeting in Jalandhar days after BJP switch

AAP MPs defection: The Aam Aadmi Party summoned its Punjab MLAs to Jalandhar for a meeting on Wednesday morning. The move is likely seen as an attempt by the leadership to keep its leaders intact after seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs switched to the BJP.

Currently AAP has 94 legislators in the 117-member Assembly constituency. According to sources, some of the MLAs, who were fielded in the 2022 state Assembly poll on the recommendation of Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, were being “closely watched” by the AAP leadership.

The meeting will take place at a private university, where MLAs will interact with the party’s senior leadership. They will be informed about the party’s future plans and strategies to keep members united.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, state unit chief Aman Arora, and Punjab affairs incharge Manish Sisodia are expected to address the media, while national convener Arvind Kejriwal is likely to join virtually.

‘Effort to protect the organisation’

Sources say that since Pathak had built the party structure from the ground up and maintained close contact with most office-bearers, MLAs are likely to receive guidance from Sisodia on how to strengthen and safeguard the organisation.

An MLA from the Malwa region said steps are being taken to stabilise the party after seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha MPs recently defected to the BJP, including Chadha and Pathak. It is also learnt that some MLAs from Ferozepur, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Ropar—who were given tickets on the recommendation of Chadha and Pathak—are under close watch, with their daily meetings being monitored.
