Amritsar news: Most-wanted gangster Raja Singh ‘Billa’ killed in police encounter near Rayya; accomplice arrested
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Police on Monday morning gunned down notorious gangster Raja Singh, also known as Billa, during an encounter in the rural belt of Rayya, Amritsar, on Monday. His close aide, identified as Manpreet Singh, was later arrested from Khilchian village under Beas police station limits.
DIG Border Range Sandeep Goel and SSP Amritsar Suhail Qasim Mir confirmed that both suspects were wanted in multiple cases of extortion, firing and violent gang activities. The duo was also allegedly involved in the brutal murder of grocery shop owner Manjit Singh on November 16.
According to officials, acting on specific intelligence inputs, the police set up checkpoints across Rayya. During checking, a motorcycle with two men approached and was signalled to stop. Instead, the suspects tried to escape at high speed, lost control and fell.
In an attempt to flee, Raja Singh opened fire at the police party, injuring ASI Shanker, who sustained a bullet wound in his shoulder. The police returned fire in self-defence, critically injuring Raja Singh. He was immediately taken to Baba Bakala Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
It is learnt Raja Singh was facing at least three criminal cases in Tarn Taran district and had been on the radar of law enforcement agencies for months.
Manpreet Singh is currently in police custody for interrogation and further investigations are underway to trace the network linked to the gangster.
