Amritsar, November 4: Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri has been shot dead in Amritsar.

Suri, a Hindutva right-wing leader, was protesting outside a temple over a management dispute when at least five shots were fired from a pistol.

Despite police protection, the attacker was able to fire at least two shots that killed him before he could be taken to a hospital, according to the BBC. According to the local police commissioner, the lone attacker, Sandeep Singh, was arrested immediately and the pistol was seized.

As per sources, the attacker arrived in an SUV with three others, but they escaped.

"Sudhir Suri was shot outside Gopal Mandir, Amritsar during some agitation. He sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to hospital and died. The accused has been arrested. His weapons are recovered," Arun Pal Singh, Commissioner of Police, Amritsar informed.

Meanwhile, condemning the incident, Punjab Congress head Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said, " Law and order is deteriorating and going from bad to worse. @INCIndia condemns murderous attack on Shiv Sena leader in Amritsar. Political differences apart, violence is unacceptable."

Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh said, "Strongly condemn brutal murder of Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri in Amritsar today. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace & harmony & fight enemies of Punjab together."

"While it reflects poorly on law and order situation in Punjab, I hope culprits are given exemplary punishment," he added.
