Anmol Gagan Maan resigns from politics, steps down as AAP MLA from Kharar
PTC Web Desk: In a major development in Punjab politics, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former Cabinet minister Anmol Gagan Maan has announced her decision to quit politics. The Kharar MLA confirmed her resignation through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“I have decided to leave politics. I have submitted my resignation as an MLA to the Speaker. I hope it will be accepted,” she wrote in her post. Expressing gratitude and best wishes for her party, Maan added, “My good wishes remain with the party. I hope the Punjab Government continues to live up to the expectations of the people.”
Anmol Gagan Maan said it was an emotional decision for her: “With a heavy heart, I have decided to step away from politics.” Her resignation marks a significant exit from the AAP's Punjab unit, where she had served as a key figure.
Anmol Gagan Maan, a well-known Punjabi singer, was elected MLA from Kharar constituency in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, defeating SAD candidate Ranjit Singh Gill by a margin of 37,718 votes. Following her victory, she was appointed as Minister of Tourism and Culture in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s Cabinet. However, she was dropped during a Cabinet reshuffle in 2024 and had since distanced herself from political affairs.
Before becoming an MLA, she served as co-incharge of AAP's youth wing. She joined the party in 2020 and was among the youngest legislators elected in 2022. She also composed the party’s campaign song for the state elections.
In 2021, she had stirred political debate by urging then-Congress Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to bring a law ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers, threatening resignation if it wasn't done. She had asserted that an AAP-led government would implement MSP within five minutes of taking power. Later, facing backlash, she clarified her inexperience by saying, “We are new to politics; I don’t know much about it.”
On the other hand, Anmol Gagan Maan married advocate Shahbaz Singh Sohi on June 16, 2024. Sohi practices at the Punjab and Haryana High Court and is also involved in real estate business in Zirakpur. His mother, Seelam Sohi, has contested elections from Banur on a Congress ticket against senior SAD leader and former finance minister Captain Kanwaljit Singh. Shahbaz’s grandfather had served as an independent MLA, and his father was known to be close to former Chief Minister Beant Singh.
In September 2024, she had hit headlines during an event in Nayagaon, Mohali, where she publicly accused senior officials of misusing her name to solicit bribes from contractors and citizens. Speaking from the stage, she warned that such actions would not be tolerated and urged the public to report any such incidents directly to her.
