Bargari sacrilege: Arrest of key accused Sandeep Bareta turns out to be case of 'mistaken identity'

Chandigarh, May 24: In the latest update on the 2015 Bargari sacrilege case, Faridkot Police on Wednesday clarified that the arrest of the key accused Sandeep Bareta at Bengaluru airport has turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

Giving clarification over the matter, the Faridkot police took to Twitter and said, "A communication from Immigration Authorities, #Bengaluru Airport was received regarding detaining of Sandeep s/o Om Prakash r/o New Delhi) matching the description of Sacrilege accused Sandeep Bareta on the basis of LOC issued by Faridkot Police in Bargari Sacrilege Cases." "The matter was promptly duly verified. It has been found that the detained person at Bengaluru Airport is not the wanted Sacrilege accused Sandeep Bareta r/o Sirsa, Haryana," it added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Police had claimed to arrest the key accused, Sandeep Bareta, from the Bengaluru airport in the 2015 Bargari sacrilege incidents in Faridkot.

Notably, Sandeep Bareta along with two others -Pardeep Kaler and Harsh Dhuri — were designated as proclaimed offenders (POs) in the Bargari sacrilege case by the Faridkot court.

The first of the three sacrilege cases was the theft of the Guru Granth Sahib from the Gurdwara Sahib at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala on June 1, 2015. Then, on September 25, two derogatory posters about the Sikh religion, Sikh preachers, and the Guru Granth Sahib were discovered pasted outside Dhodha Peer Gate at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala. The third case occurred on October 12, when pages of the Guru Granth Sahib were discovered strewn outside the Bargari gurdwara and in the local streets.
