Canada shock: Punjab woman’s death first dubbed accident, now husband’s brother charged with murder

PTC Web Desk: A pall of grief has descended on a peasant family from Gujjarwal village after learning that their daughter, Mandeep Kaur, who had moved to Canada with hopes of building a promising future, was allegedly murdered. The revelation has stunned the family, especially since they were earlier told that Mandeep had died in a road accident just weeks ago.

The tragedy deepened when Canadian authorities informed the family that Gurjot Singh Khaira, the younger brother of Mandeep’s husband, had been arrested in connection with her death. Delta Police have charged Gurjot with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains, marking a significant shift from the initial investigation.

Mandeep’s family in Punjab is struggling to process the sudden twists and is uncertain about navigating the legal complexities overseas. Her father, Jagdev Singh Jaggie, shared that Mandeep had moved to Canada six years ago as an international student and married into a Lodhiwal-based family only seven months earlier.

Jagdev Singh, who lives elsewhere in Canada with his son, said he never suspected his daughter was in danger. The family was informed about the alleged accident two days after it reportedly occurred. It was only after Mandeep’s cremation on November 6 that the police told the family about the alleged mishandling of her remains by Gurjot. Initially charged only with indignity to human remains, Gurjot faced the upgraded murder charge on November 25 after Crown Counsel reviewed the case.

The family learned about the upgraded charge only after Jagdev returned from immersing his daughter’s ashes in holy waters.

Mandeep’s mother, Jaswinder Kaur, remains shattered and is desperately seeking clarity on the circumstances leading to her daughter’s death.

Jagdev Singh Jaggie has now decided to return to Canada to pursue justice for Mandeep.
