CM Mann opposes Centre's move to deploy CISF at Nangal Dam: 'Will raise issue at Niti Aayog'

PTC News Desk: The Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann on Thursday criticised Centre's move to deploy 296 CISF personnel to secure Nangal Dam.

While opposing the Centre's decision, CM Mann questioned that what is the need to deploy additional security personnel when Punjab government is already providing security to the Dams. He further said that the issue will be raised with Prime Minister Modi at the Niti Aayog meeting which scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Earlier the central government had sanctioned took over the security of the Nangal Dam and sanctioned the deployment of contingent of 296 personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to the site.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) will be responsible for bearing the cost of the deployment. The financial outlay amounts to a total of Rs 8,58,69,800, which translates to approximately Rs 2,90,100 per CISF personnel.

Addressing the media in Sangrur on Thursday, Mann said the deployment of CISF personnel will cost Rs 8.58 crore per annum, showing a copy of the Centre’s letter in this regard.

“They say either the BBMB or Punjab will pay this money. What was the need for this when Punjab Police was already providing security to the dam for free? Why should we give money?” Mann asked.

“I will strongly oppose this move. We will neither allow money to be given through the BBMB nor from the state exchequer of the Punjab Government,” he added.
