'Detention stalled parliamentary work': Jailed MP Amritpal Singh told Punjab and Haryana HC
PTC News Desk: Jailed MP Amritpal Singh on Tuesday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that all the work in his parliamentary constituency has been stalled because of his detention.
Khadoor Sahib MP appeared before the Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry through videoconferencing and represented himself in view of his lawyer's abstention from work.
Currently Amritpal Singh is incarcerated in Assam's Dibrugarh Central Jail under the stringent National Security Act.
During the hearing, he submitted that NSA detention had completely stalled the functioning of his parliamentary constituency. He further said that he had sought conditional bail to raise the issued but it had not been granted so far.
Amritpal also maintained that the issue was not confined to him personally but concerned that the parliamentary consituency he represented needed to be heard.
“In the democratic system of India, an elected representative has the right to raise issues before Parliament. But the NSA imposed on me has been extended to its third year… All these issues need to be raised before Parliament,” he told the Bench.
