Farmers march towards Chandigarh, stage sit-in dharna on Burail Jail road

PTC News Desk: Several farmers organisations on Monday began their march towards Chandigarh from Mohali, intensifying their protest to press their demands.

The protesters are moving from near Fortis Hospital towards Burail Jail, while the Chandigarh Police have sealed entry points and border areas leading into the city.

Heavy security from both Mohali and Chandigarh police have been deployed to stop the farmers from proceeding further.

Officials from both the Mohali and Chandigarh police are currently trying to persuade the protesters to avoid confrontation. Farmer leader jagjit Singh Dallewal said he could not leave the farmers standing in the heat to attend a meeting.

The farmers have gathered under the umbrella of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-political) alleging bank official's failure to return the cheques after collecting them during issuance of loans.

According to the protesters, this practice has led to severe financial distress, with some farmers reportedly losing their land. They also claimed that similar issues had driven some farmers in Sangrur to take their own lives.

The farmers were attempting to march towards government offices in Sector 17 to press for their demands. However, police officials from Mohali and Chandigarh intervened and are trying to facilitate talks between the protesters and concerned authorities.
