Jalandhar road accident: Three vegetable traders killed as PRTC bus collides with mini truck
PTC Web Desk: Three persons died on the spot in a tragic road accident on Kapurthala Road near Mand village in Jalandhar on Tuesday morning. According to eyewitnesses, a speeding Punjab Roadways (PRTC) bus was coming from the wrong direction when it suddenly rammed into a small mini-truck, commonly called 'Chhota Hathi'. The collision was so severe that the mini-truck was completely mangled, and all three occupants died on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Rakesh, a resident of Deep Nagar Colony, Kapurthala, Mukesh Kumar, a resident of New Vegetable Market, Kapurthala and Ishwar Bind, a resident of New Vegetable Market, Kapurthala.
All three were vegetable traders from Kapurthala who regularly travelled to the wholesale market in Jalandhar to procure fresh stock. On Tuesday morning, while en route to Jalandhar, their mini-truck was struck head-on by the government bus near Mand village.
A team from the Maqsudan police station rushed to the scene for investigation. Within hours, the bus driver was taken into custody and interrogated. An FIR has been registered at the Maqsudan police station against the accused driver.
Meanwhile, as the news of the accident spread, panic and anger erupted in the area. Grieving family members and villagers staged a protest by blocking the Kapurthala-Jalandhar Road, demanding strict action against the bus driver. They placed the bodies on the road as part of the demonstration, leading to a traffic jam.
The protest continued for nearly two hours before police officials managed to pacify the crowd and restore traffic.
SHO Bikram Singh of Maqsudan police station said they received information in the morning about a collision between a PRTC bus and a mini-truck. A team reached the spot and took the bodies into custody. Initially, the families refused to hand over the bodies for post-mortem and staged a road protest, but after assurance, the situation was brought under control.
The bus driver has been arrested.
