Punjab: Khadoor Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura convicted in molestation and assault case
PTC Web Desk: Tarn Taran Additional Sessions Judge Prem Kumar has convicted Khadoor Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura along with six others in a case of molestation and assault involving a local woman. The court will announce the quantum of sentence on September 12. Following the verdict, the police took Lalpura into custody, and he is being sent to judicial remand.
The case was registered after Harbinder Kaur, a resident of Usma village, lodged a complaint alleging that Lalpura and his aides molested and assaulted her during a wedding function in 2013.
Harbinder Kaur was allegedly assaulted by Tarn Taran city police and others, including AAP MLA Lalpura, during a wedding function on March 3, 2013. She was allegedly beaten with canes and also subjected to molestation at a marriage palace on Goindwal Sahib Road. The shocking incident drew widespread outrage, prompting the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance. The apex court directed paramilitary protection for the victim, her cousin Jagjit Singh—an eyewitness in the case—her family members, and the Usman village sarpanch.
The chargesheet named eight policemen and several civilians, including MLA Lalpura, as accused. One of the accused, Head Constable Paramjit Singh, died during the course of the trial.
The victim had attended the wedding along with her family when the alleged assault took place. Following the incident, Tarn Taran city police registered a case under Sections 354, 323, 506, 148, and 149 of the IPC, along with provisions of the SC/ST Act.
