PTC News Desk: A 17-year-old girl, presumed dead after he father pushed her into the canal reappeared alive two months after the incident, inflicting a fresh twist in the police investigation. In a shocking twist, the girl has demanded release of her father while asserting that her mother is the real culprit.
The incident unfolded on October 3 when the father Surjit Singh, allegedly tied his daughter's hands and pushed her into a canal in Rajasthan in front of his wife and the other three daughters, over suspicion on her character. The entire episode was filmed by Singh, which also captured girl's mother pleading for her life.
Two months after the incident, the girl, who was believed to have died reappeared on a local digital channel and narrated her ordeal and subsequent survival. She further asserted that her father is innocent and was only motivated by her mother to commit the crime. She has now demanded from the authorities to release her father and take action against her mother, who is the real culprit.
She said she was swept away by the canal water, the ropes tied around her hands loosened. A fter a while, she managed to escape out to safety after clinging to an iron rod. Meanwhile three passers-by rescued her and helped her take shelter at a local gurdwara.
But she never approached the police after escaping the canal and refused to disclose where she stayed during the intervening months, saying only that she survived “by God’s grace”.
Despite extensive searches, the girl's body was never found. Acting on a complaint from Preet’s cousin, the Ferozepur City police had registered a murder case under relevant sections and arrested the father. He remains in judicial custody in the central jail ever since.
