Operation Blue Star anniversary: Amritsar turns fortress as security beefed up, 4,000 cops deployed to guard city
PTC News Desk: Ahead of the 41st Operation Blue Star anniversary, Amritsar is under tight security as nearly 4,000 police personnel have been deployed to guard the city. The police have intensified checks and several checkpoints have been established across the city specifically around the Golden Temple to prevent any unrest.
Officers from all the wings have been mobilised and intelligence officers are closely monitoring the sensitive areas for any suspicious activity.
“Services of all the wings of the police are being taken. Besides, city police, cops from surrounding districts, including Amritsar rural, Batala and Tarn Taran, have been deployed in the city,” an official said.
“In addition to this, special 24-hour checkpoints have been established at the city’s entry and exit points as well as in internal areas. Thorough checking of vehicles and suspicious individuals is being done at designated nakas (checkpoints),” commissioner of police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said.
The walled city of Amritsar is carefully being guarded by police officials especially surrounding Golden Temple and close scrutiny of passersby is being conducted.
Meanwhile, tensions escalate as Sikh hardliner group Dal Khalsa has objected to Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj delivering a sandesh (address) from the platform of the highest Sikh temporal seat.
