Panic grips Amritsar after several schools receive bomb threat, premises evacuated
PTC News Desk: Panic gripped across Amritsar on Friday morning after several private schools received bomb threat emails. Principals and school heads of many well-known private schools got similar emails claiming that bombs had been planted on their campuses. Schools immediately evacuated students, informing parents through calls and messages to pick up their children.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed that multiple schools in the city and nearby rural areas had received suspicious emails. He said a Gazetted Officer had been stationed at each school and anti-sabotage teams were carrying out checks. The Cyber Police Station has also begun tracing the source of the emails.
A senior administrator of a well-known private school told The Tribune that their school received the threat on its official email ID, which was flagged by the institution’s director. “As soon as we saw the email, our first priority was student safety. We informed parents that the school would remain closed for the day. Even if it turns out to be a hoax, we can’t take any risks after the recent Delhi blast,” the principal said.
Another major school contacted the police, after which a bomb squad searched the entire campus. Deputy Commissioner Dalwinder Singh has called an emergency meeting. District Education Officer Rajesh Sharma said, “Our officials are meeting with school heads. We are examining all possibilities and working closely with the police. I visited the schools as soon as I received the information.”
