Panjab University student body calls for 'PU Bachao Morcha' on Nov 10 after Centre puts overhaul decision on hold

PTC News Desk: The Panjab University student body has called for a massive protest on November 10 against the October 28 notification of the Centre that restructures the governing body of the university and its subsequent decision of putting the overhaul in abeyance.

The Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) has accused the Centre of making a mockery of the issue as “no notification has been cancelled and the government has merely tried to create confusion."

In a notification released on Wednesday, the Union government had put on hold its decision to restructure the governing bodies of the Panjab University and subsequent dissolution of the Senate and Syndicate  until further notification.

Massive confusion prevailed on the Panjab University campus with the release of the November 4 notification by the Ministry of Education stating "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1), read with sub-section (2) and (3), of section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966 (31 of 1966), the Central Government hereby rescinds the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, number S.O. 4933 (E), dated the 28th October, 2025, published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3, Sub-section (ii), dated the 30th October, 2025."

According to the notification released on October 28, the Centre had  dissolved the 59-year-old Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh and approved a complete restructuring of the two highest governing bodies. The latest reforms marks the end of Syndicate's elected status and transforms it into a complete nominated entity.

Protestors gathered in large numbers on Wednesday holding placards and raised slogans against the 'undemocratic move' of the centre and demanded rollback of the move.

A Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) statement says, “The Government of India has made a mockery of the issue. In reality, no notification has been cancelled; the government has merely tried to create confusion. A new notification has been issued, in which the only change is that the implementation of the new Senate structure, which was earlier to take effect immediately, will now be enforced as per further orders from the Central Government. This means that the new Senate structure remains the same; only its date of implementation has been deferred.
