PSPCL reels under loss as consumers install multiple meters for ‘free electricity’

Although Punjab government’s manifesto promise of free electricity has brought relieve to public but it has pushed Punjab state power corporation limited in deep loss. Reportedly, people have started bribing meter readers to get zero electricity bills.

Taking cognizance of this fraud, Punjab State Power Corporation terminated the services of 24 meter readers across Punjab. To reduce the burden of expensive electricity, the government had announced to give 300 units free every month since July 1. 600 units are available free of cost in two months electricity bill cycle.

According to information, consumers of Punjab tried to install multiple meters in house so that unit load could be divided into two despite of electricity usage.

Services of 24 meter readers giving fake readings were terminated. In which action was taken on 10 meter readers in Amritsar, 7 in Ferozepur, 2 in Bathinda, 5 in Tarn Taran. Similarly, double meters were removed from 13 houses in Pathankot and load was increased.

Instructions have been issued from Powercom's head office that in case of any discrepancy, the JE of the area will be held responsible.
