Diljit Dosanjh Delhi concert: Child rights body asks police to act on complaint against singer ahead of JLN Stadium event
PTC Web Desk: A controversy has surfaced just ahead of Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh’s live concert at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium on Friday. The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has written to the Delhi Police Commissioner, asking the force to take appropriate action as per rules on a complaint that accuses the singer’s songs of glorifying alcohol, drugs and weapons.
What the complaint says
The complaint was filed with the commission on October 14 by Professor Dr Panditrao Dharennavar, a social activist based in Chandigarh. He alleged that songs such as “Patiala Peg”, “5 Tara Theke” and another track referring to opium being found in a pocket promote intoxicants and arms.
Dharennavar expressed concern that such lyrics could harm the mental health and image of children. He asked that the singer be barred from performing these songs at the concert and that a suitable advisory or notice be issued in this regard. He also demanded that the singer not be allowed to perform altered versions of the lyrics. In support of his plea, he cited the 2019 orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Objection to children on stage
The complaint also seeks a ban on inviting children onto the stage during the show. According to Dharennavar, loud music and rapidly flashing lights can be harmful to children’s health, particularly their hearing.
Commission’s response
A Bench of the DCPCR comprising chairman Dr Om Prakash Vyas and members Rahul Gautam and Swati Gupta heard the matter. The commission forwarded a copy of the complaint to the police and asked them to take the required action. In its order, the commission noted that protecting the interests and rights of children falls within its jurisdiction under the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005.
About the tour
Dosanjh’s “Aura India Tour” is currently being held across several cities in the country. For the Delhi leg, the Delhi Metro will run services until midnight to help concert-goers travel home.
