Punjab govt confirms permanent closure of Zira liquor factory after admitting pollution violations before NGT

PTC Web Desk: In a major victory for the long-standing Zira Sangharsh Morcha, the Punjab Government has agreed to permanently shut down the controversial Zira liquor factory. The state admitted before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that Malbros International Pvt. Ltd distillery and ethanol project located in Zira, Ferozepur, has been a source of environmental pollution and must be closed permanently.

The development marks a significant milestone in the residents’ fight against pollution, which has been ongoing for several years. The admission was made through an affidavit filed on November 2, 2025, by Manish Kumar, Special Secretary of the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment, Punjab. The affidavit detailed the documented history of environmental violations committed by the project.

The submission was made in compliance with the NGT’s earlier order dated September 9, 2025. The document reportedly includes a series of admissions that validate the concerns repeatedly raised by the Zira Joint Morcha and the Public Action Committee (PAC).

Earlier, during previous hearings, representatives of the project had requested permission to continue operations, but the latest submission from the state government indicates a clear stance toward permanent closure.

Leaders of the Zira Sangharsh Morcha have welcomed the government’s stand and called it a “people’s victory,” highlighting the relentless struggle of local residents and environmental activists who protested for months demanding justice.

“This decision proves that the people’s movement can bring change when voices unite against injustice and pollution,” said a representative of the Zira Sangharsh Morcha.
