Punjab leaders 'condemn cowardly terrorist attack,' pay tribute to martyrs

Poonch Terror attack update: A pall of gloom descended on entire Punjab after the news of the martyrdom of four jawans surfaced. Several politicians also paid tribute to the martyrs are urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to announce ex-gratia for bereaved families.

Notably, five soldiers, four of whom were from Punjab, were killed on Thursday as an Indian Army truck was attacked by unidentified terrorists. The truck reportedly caught fire after the use of grenades by terrorists.


Announcing the tragic news on Friday morning, CM Bhagwant Mann tweeted in Punjabi, “As many as five jawans of Rashtriya Rifles, four jawans were from Punjab martyred in a terrorist attack."

Havildar Mandeep Singh belonged to Ludhiana's Chankoian Kacan village, Sepoy Harkrishan Singh was from Gurdaspur district's Talwandi Barth, Lance Naik Kulwant Singh from Moga's Charik and Sepoy Sewak Singh belonged to Bagha village of Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda district. Meanwhile, Lance Naik Debashish was from Orissa's Algum Samil Khandayat village in the Puri district.

Strongly condemning the tragic incident, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said, "Soldiers from Punjab, who are always at the forefront in protecting India's unity and integrity, have once again been martyred in the line of duty."

"Strongly condemn cowardly terrorist attack & killing of 5 soldiers, including 4 from Punjab. My deep condolences with the bereaved families," he added.

Former Union Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal tweeted, "My deepest sympathies with the brave mothers & families of 5 soldiers martyred in the Rajouri sector in Jammu & Kashmir. Salute to our soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the motherland."

Congress' Punjab unit President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also took to Twitter to pay his condolences. "4 soldiers Hav Mandeep Singh, Lance NK Kulwant Singh, Sep Harkrishan Singh and Sep Sewak Singh belonged to Punjab. I urge Bhagwant Mann led Government of Punjab to immediately announce ex gratia compensation and a govt job to the members of the bereaved families," he tweeted.

"My deepest condolences to the families of 5 bravehearts who lost their lives in terror attack on an army vehicle in Jammu and Kashmir. I prayed for speedy recovery of those injured," tweeted Partap Singh Bajwa, Punjab's Leader of Opposition.
