Only son of parents, inconsolable wife: Plight of families of J-K terror attack martyrs

Poonch Terror Attack: Grief gripped Punjab after the news of the martyrdom of four Punjab jawans surfaced.

Five soldiers were killed on Thursday as an Indian Army truck was attacked by unidentified terrorists. The truck reportedly caught fire after the use of grenades by terrorists.


The martyrs

Four of the deceased are from Punjab. The deceased soldiers have been identified as havildar Mandeep Singh, lance naik Debashish Baswal, lance naik Kulwant Singh, sepoy Harkrishan Singh and Sepoy Sewak Singh, informed the Army's 16 Corps based in Nagrota.

According to the information received, Havildar Mandeep Singh belonged to Ludhiana's Chankoian Kacan village, Sepoy Harkrishan Singh was from Gurdaspur district's Talwandi Barth, Lance Naik Kulwant Singh from Moga's Charik and Sepoy Sewak Singh belonged to Bagha village of Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda district. Meanwhile, Lance Naik Debashish was from Orissa's Algum Samil Khandayat village in the Puri district.

Plight of families

A pall of gloom descended on the Bathinda district after the news of the martyrdom of Sepoy Sevak Singh surfaced.

Sevak Singh of the National Rifles Unit belonged to the village Bagha of Talwani Sabi, Bathinda, Punjab. He joined the army in 2018 and was the only son of his parents.

Father Gurcharan Singh, who was inconsolable after his son's martyrdom, said that informed that he had just returned to his posting just 20 days ago.

There is a wave of grief in the village of Lance Naik Kulwant Singh. The jawan was from Moga's Charik village in Punjab. Kulwant Singh's wife remains unconsolable as his mortal remains will soon reach the village.

Kulwant Singh is survived by his wife and two children, a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and a 3-month-old son.

The martyr's father, Baldev Singh, also sacrificed his life for the nation during the Kargil War.

Sepoy Harkrishan Singh was from the Gurdaspur district's Talwandi Barth village. Mangal Singh, Harkrishan Singh's father, has also retired from the army.

He is survived by his wife, a two-year-old daughter and elderly parents.

Havildar Mandeep Singh belonged to village Chankoian Kacan of Ludhiana district. The village was in grief as soon as word of his martyrdom arrived. He had joined the army 16 years ago and was from the National Rifle Unit

Talking about Mandeep Singh's martyrdom, his brother Jagjit Singh expressed grief and added that he is proud of his elder brother who sacrificed his life for the nation.

"Mandeep's posting was about 80 km from Jammu. He used to call home often. A day before the terror attack, Mandeep had called home and said he is safe."
