Punjab fuel shortage update: CM rules out lockdown, says state has 12-day petrol, 14-day diesel and 6-day LPG stock

Punjab LPG and fuel shortage update: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday ruled out the possibility of a lockdown in the state and asked people not to panic over fuel shortages amid Middle East crisis.

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, CM Bhagwant Mann said they held a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. CM Mann clarified that currently, Punjab has sufficient fuel reserves, with petrol stock for 12 days, diesel for 14 days, and LPG for 6 days.

He said similar stock levels existed even two months ago  before the ongoing Middle East crisis. He said there was no reason for concern. He asked people to use petrol and diesel as usual as there was no need to rush or create panic.

Monitoring fuel supply and hoarding

The Punjab Chief Minister said deputy commissioners of all districts have been asked to keep a watch on long queues at petrol pumps and check any irregularities, including under supply of fuel. He said special teams have been established to curb the sale of fuel on the black marketing, besides hoarding.

CM Mann said the waiting period for booking a second LPG cylinder in rural areas has been proposed to be reduced from 45 days to 25 days as in urban areas.

Global situation and appeal to PM

In view of tensions in Gulf countries affecting global supply chains, CM Mann said the situation has created panic worldwide, especially due to disruptions in maritime routes.

He said during the virtual meeting with the Prime Minister and other CMs, Punjab raised key concerns related to agriculture, industry  and border security.

He urged the Prime Minister to use India’s diplomatic relations to ensure uninterrupted imports and exports, particularly petroleum products.

Highlighting the ongoing wheat harvest season, CM Mann said it is important to ensure uninterrupted diesel supply for tractors, harvesters and transport vehicles.

According to CM Mann, the govt has informed India has oil reserves for 60 days and LPG supply secured for one month. He reiterated that Punjab’s current LPG stock of 6 days is in line with normal conditions.

The CM said the state has conducted 1,497 inspections till March 27 and seized 301 LPG cylinders from illegal hoarders. Strict legal action will be taken against those involved in profiteering during the crisis.
