Punjab poll row deepens: Poll panel orders probe into alleged Patiala SSP audio even as police call clip AI-generated

PTC Web Desk:  A major political controversy has erupted in Punjab ahead of the December 14 zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections, after the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) released an alleged leaked audio clip accusing senior police officers of preventing opposition candidates from filing nomination papers. The State Election Commission has now taken serious note of the matter and issued a notice to the Punjab DGP, directing him to conduct an immediate inquiry and submit a detailed report.

The alleged audio, posted on social media by SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, reportedly features Patiala SSP Varun Sharma instructing SPs, SHOs and DSPs to block opposition candidates at their homes, villages or on their way to nomination centres. The SAD claims the recording exposes an organised attempt to interfere with the democratic process and influence the upcoming polls.

He described it as “a murder of democracy” and urged the commission to suspend the officials involved. The party also said it was prepared to provide recordings, transcripts and witness statements as evidence.

Police reject allegations, call audio AI-generated

The Patiala police have strongly denied the charges. SSP Varun Sharma said the audio and video being circulated were “fake, AI-generated content” created with the intention to mislead people and disturb law and order.

Election Commission steps in

Responding to the escalating controversy, the State Election Commission directed the DGP to investigate the authenticity of the audio clip and file a comprehensive report urgently. Sources said significant action could follow against the Patiala SSP if the investigation finds any wrongdoing.

Divisional Commissioner and election observer Vinay Bublani confirmed that the commission is already examining the matter and said that “no irregularities” had been detected so far. He added that proactive measures are being taken to ensure the integrity of the polling process.

Nomination process concludes amid tension

The dispute surfaced on the last day of the nomination process, which ran from December 1 to December 6, with scrutiny held on December 5. Around 1.36 crore voters are eligible to participate in the elections, and results will be announced on December 17.

The SAD has accused the ruling AAP of misusing the police to pressure opposition candidates. One officer in the clip allegedly mentions that AAP leader Ranjodh Hadana was “satisfied” with his work, an allegation the police dismiss as fabricated.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the state government is fully committed to conducting free and fair elections. He urged all candidates to participate peacefully and ensure that their nomination papers are accurately filed. Cheema said he would comment on the audio leak only after the investigation is completed.
