Punjab pollution board imposes Rs 5 cr fine on Ropar thermal plant for violating environment laws
PTC News Desk: The Punjab Pollution Control Board has imposed a fine of Rs 5 crore on Ropar thermal plant for violating environment laws. The board has also withdrawn the 'consent to operate' the plant.
The plant has been given a deadline of 15 days to pay the fine of Rs 5 crore.
According to the sources, with the board withdrawing the “consent to operate”, the plant authorities would not be able get fresh coal supply till the orders were stayed.
The order comes after a complaint was filed alleging deposition of fly ash on houses and crops. The complainant Jagdeep Singh of Thalli village in his complaint, which was made in January 2024 alleged that the operation was in grave violation of environmental laws hence affecting the households and pose significant environmental hazards.
The PPCB officials also found discrepancies in reported ash generation and utilisation data, indicating poor recordkeeping or intentional misreporting.
Plant Chief Engineer Harish Kumar Sharma said that they are mulling to file an appeal against the order of the Punjab Pollution Control Board Chairman in coming days.
