Sutlej river threat looms large at Sasrali embankment, Ludhiana DC seeks Army assistance
PTC News Desk: The flood situation in Punjab may have subsided after causing widespread destruction, concerns regarding the Sutlej river near Sasrali village in Ludhian remain intact.
Reports suggest that the embankment at Sasrali is under threat, prompting the Deputy Commissioner to urgently seek assistance from the Indian Army.
DC Himanshu Jain stated that every day around 1.5 acres of land is getting submerged into the Sutlej at the Sasrali embankment, impacting nearby villages.
The Deputy Commissioner further said, however the water level in Sutlej river is currently flowing at a distance from temporary embankments, given the gravity of the situation, a formal request seeking assistance has been sent to the Indian Army. He added that continuous erosion at the Sasrali embankment prompted the appeal for technical assistance from the Army.
As per discussions held with the irrigation authorities, the water level is likely to recede in the coming days. While there is no immediate threat to human lives, the risk to agricultural land remains significant. He urged residents not to panic.
Damage due to change in river flow: Villagers
Local residents said that unlike other parts of Punjab where the Sutlej overflowed its banks, in Sasrali the river is flowing below ground level. The damage here has been caused by a shift in the river’s flow. As the water strikes the banks, chunks of soil often collapse into the river.
According to villagers’ estimates, nearly 300 acres of land inside the Dhussi Dam area and about 100 acres outside the dam have already been submerged.
