SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami warns Punjab govt against undermining Sri Akal Takht Sahib's authority

PTC Web Desk:  Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has issued a strong warning to the Punjab Government, alleging repeated attacks on Sikh institutions and principles, and cautioned the state against attempting to assert authority over Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Addressing a press conference at the historic Gurdwara Sri Charan Kanwal Sahib, Advocate Dhami said the Sikh community is facing serious challenges and must remain united to confront them. He accused the Punjab Government of trying to project itself as more powerful than Sri Akal Takht Sahib by constituting a SIT to probe the issue of 328 missing holy saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Advocate Dhami pointed out that Sri Akal Takht Sahib has already taken cognisance of the matter within its jurisdiction. Questioning the government’s intent, he said the SGPC has been efficiently managing gurdwaras for decades and asked whether the government now wants the police to take over their administration.

Referring to the report prepared by Dr Ishar, the SGPC president asserted that the 328 holy saroops were not missing, as claimed. He said attempts were being made to weaken Sikh institutions under the guise of investigations.

Drawing a parallel with Sikh history, Advocate Dhami said Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji never fought personal battles but stood for the oppressed, the poor and for righteousness. He stressed that the Sikh Panth must once again show strength and resolve to face present-day challenges.

Advocate Dhami also reiterated his opposition to the term “Bal Diwas” used for commemorating the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas, stating that the four Sahibzadas were not ordinary children but embodiments of the Guru’s divine light. He said such terminology undermines Sikh principles and traditions.

Strongly condemning a recent cartoon allegedly released by the BJP depicting Sikh Gurus and the four Sahibzadas, Advocate Dhami said portraying Sikh Gurus in human or cartoon form is unacceptable. He warned that if governments and political parties do not refrain from such actions, the Sikh Panth will be compelled to respond and reconsider its stance.

He cautioned authorities not to test the patience of the Sikh community, asserting that Sikh sentiments and religious principles must be respected at all costs.
