Sukhbir Singh Badal announces candidacy from Gidderbaha for 2027 Punjab Assembly elections
PTC Web Desk: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has announced that he will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from Gidderbaha. He said the decision comes in response to demands from the people of Gidderbaha. Until now, Sukhbir Singh Badal has contested from Jalalabad, a seat he won in the 2009 bypoll, followed by victories in 2012 and 2017. However, he lost the seat in the 2022 elections.
Gidderbaha also holds political significance for the Badal family. Former Chief Minister Sardar Parkash Singh Badal, Sukhbir’s father, had contested from this constituency in the past. Traditionally, though, the Lambi seat has been considered the family stronghold. Even so, the former Chief Minister lost from Lambi in the previous election.
Gidderbaha is currently represented by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Raja Warring, who regularly contests from the seat. In the last byelection, he fielded his wife Amrita Warring, but she was defeated.
While Lambi remains the Badal family’s ancestral seat, the final decision regarding candidature from there is still unclear.
