Tragedy in Russia: 20-year-old Indian student from Punjab drowns while swimming with friends in Moscow
PTC Web Desk: In a heartbreaking incident, a 20-year-old Indian student from Punjab, Sai Dhruv Kapoor, lost his life while swimming in the sea near Moscow, Russia. Dhruv, a resident of Suncity on Amloh Road in Khanna, Ludhiana, had gone to the beach on Sunday with three friends when he was swept away by strong waves. His friends managed to escape, but Dhruv drowned before rescue teams could save him.
The deceased was the only son of Karan Kapoor, who runs a small debt consultancy office in Khanna. The family, already facing financial hardships, had sent Dhruv to Russia to pursue higher education. He had initially returned after six months due to visa conditions but was sent again in March on a study visa.
On the day of the incident, Dhruv had informed his father over a phone call that he was heading to the seaside with his friends. Although the father initially expressed concern, he eventually allowed it, thinking it was one of Dhruv’s last outings before returning to India. Moments later, the family received a distressing call that Dhruv had drowned. The family has also received video footage of Dhruv being rescued and transported to a hospital, but it was too late.
The family is now appealing to both the Central and Punjab governments for help in bringing Dhruv’s body back to India for the final rites.
The process of repatriating a body from a foreign country is both complicated and expensive. The Kapoor family has reached out to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar through email and also submitted a request via the official help portal, seeking urgent assistance.
