Punjab: In a major setback to Cabinet Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday started an investigation into the alleged multi-crore scam in the disbursal of funds under the SC Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme.
According to sources, the Chandigarh office of CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) has asked the Principal Secretary (Social Justice), for a complete record of the probe report which was submitted to the Chief Secretary by then Additional Chief Secretary Kirpa Shankar Saroj on August 24, 2020.
Reportedly, the CBI decided to probe the matter on the complaint filed by the Central Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
It also sought certified copies of the documents related to the funds received by Punjab under the central scheme. Even CBI has asked for copies of the documents, related to the disbursal of funds by the Punjab government to the educational institutions.
The copies of the end-use report submitted by the Punjab government to the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment have also been sought.
The Cabinet minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was also accused of defending officials, including a Deputy Director, involved in the SC scholarship scam.
It may be recalled that a high-level team under the Chief Secretary Vini Mahajan had given a clean chit to Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot.
Shiromani Akali Dal started protesting against him and demanded Dharamsot's ouster. SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal had also said that the party will order an investigation into the SC Scholarship scam once the SAD forms government in Punjab.
