Punjab wakes up to protests by teachers, health dept staff; commuters harried

Mohali: Despite Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's strict warning to protesters, agitating teachers and health department staff continued their stir in parts of Punjab on Wednesday, causing inconvenience to commuters.

According to reports reaching here, protesters have blocked several key roads in parts of  Punjab. In Chandigarh, the situation turned worse when teachers, who went to meet Sohan Singh, who is protesting atop a mobile tower near the MLA hostel, were lathicharged by the police.

In Kharar, ASHA workers have blocked the main highway in support of their demands.

On the other hand, some teachers have climbed atop a mobile tower in Kharar. The protesting teachers have also planned a protest march to Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's official residence.

The protest by another group of teachers at a water tank near Sohana light point in Mohali district continued on Wednesday.

In Patiala, long traffic jam is being witnessed near the main bus stand since the evening of November 30 due to a protest by teachers.

In Jalandhar, professors are sitting on a dharna in front of Lyallpur Khalsa College. Teachers also held a bare foot rally to register their protest against Punjab Education Minister Pargat Singh.

In Ludhiana, members of the Contractual and DPL Workers' Association have launched a dharna at Punjab Agricultural University.
