AAP MP Malvinder Kang puts own government in crosshairs; calls GMADA 'lut da kender', slams selective demolition of shops
PTC News Desk: Aam Aadmi Party's member of parliament from Anandpur Sahib on Wednesday put his own government in crosshairs after he alleged that Greater Mohali Development Authority (GMADA) has now become a 'corruption hotspot' .
While reacting to the selective demolition of shops in certain Punjab villages by GMADA officials, he said “GMADA lutt da kender ban gaya hai…” . The village where the demolition drive was carried out is a part of his Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency.
This is not the first time Kang has criticised his own party. A few months ago, after seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs left the party and joined the BJP, Kang blamed the concentration of power in the hands of a few leaders and said the lack of internal communication had weakened the party.
Earlier this year, Kang also criticised the Punjab Police over its action against protesting farmers in Bathinda. He also questioned illegal sand mining in Punjab, even though the state government is run by his own party, AAP.
Kang had earlier left the BJP in 2020 in protest against the three farm laws introduced by the BJP-led central government. Farmers had staged a year-long protest on the outskirts of Delhi against these laws. Kang later joined the AAP.
Last year, he was among the first AAP leaders to oppose the state's land pooling policy, which faced strong resistance from farmers. After AAP performed poorly in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Kang also pointed to the growing disconnect between the party's MLAs and voters. AAP won only three of Punjab's 13 parliamentary seats.
On the latest issue, Kang said he spoke to GMADA Chief Administrator Sandeep Rishi late Tuesday night. He said he strongly criticised Rishi for failing to stop corruption.
Kang said it was time for the Chief Minister to stop what he called the harassment of poor people and take action against corrupt officials by removing them from their posts.
