LPU rampage: Police form SIT to probe sexual assault case as university calls rumours 'baseless'
PTC News Desk: The Jalandhar Police has said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising Phagwara SP Major Singh, DSP Palwinder Singh and a woman police inspector besides representatives of students.

DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said in the preliminary investigation, it came to fore that that a girl student, residing in the G-3 hostel, was allegedly raped three days ago.
“The victim has left for her house following the incident. We have recorded the statement and the process of registering a FIR under required sections. The matter will be thoroughly investigated as all the digital and technical evidences will be taken into record,” DIG Singla said.
He added that the probe will be carried out in a scientific manner and the representatives of students union will be roped in the investigation.
Meanwhile the university administration categorically rejected claims, calling them 'baseless rumours' It urged students, parents and members of the public not to believe, circulate or amplify unverified information.
In a statement issued by Registrar Monica Gulati, the university said certain “anti-social elements” were spreading misleading information and that the manner in which the rumours were being circulated appeared to be a deliberate attempt to malign the reputation of the institute.
The development follows reports of violence surfaced at Lovely professional University in Punjab early Sunday after an unverified message about the alleged sexual assault of a female student circulated among students, leading to protests on the campus.
The situation reportedly escalated around 2 am, with a large number of students gathering near the girls’ hostel. During the unrest, parts of the campus property were damaged, including window panes and signages. There were also reports of objects being thrown and fires being started at some locations inside the campus.
The developments have also led to a large number of posts and videos being shared on social media. Authorities are expected to ascertain the facts surrounding the allegation while maintaining peace on the campus.
